Nationwide, more than 781,000 civil lawsuits were filed in China last year, according to government figures. That's 115,000 more than just two years earlier."It's a good thing that we see the increase," said Sun Dongdong, professor in the law school at Peking University and a consultant to the Chinese Consumer Assn. "It indicates that people's awareness of law has been greatly improved."
The rise in lawsuits has come hand in hand with China's dazzling economic success and the burgeoning ranks of attorneys. Shanghai, China's showcase business center, now has about 6,200 lawyers, a nearly 50% increase from early 2000.
