WASHINGTON (CNN) -- President Bush on Tuesday selected U.S. Circuit Judge John Roberts Jr. as his nominee to replace retiring Justice Sandra Day O'Connor on the Supreme Court.Bush called the selection of a nominee to the high court "one of the most consequential decisions a president makes."
The move sets the stage for a possible battle with advocacy groups who have criticized Roberts in the past.

Roberts Jr. on Tuesday as his first nominee for the Supreme Court, selecting a rock-solid conservative whose nomination could trigger a tumultuous battle over the direction of the nation's highest court, senior administration officials said.
