TRENTON, NJ, United States (UPI) -- A New Jersey judge has received a two-month suspension for kissing a law clerk. The state Supreme Court found that Judge Randolph Subryan made 'an unwanted advance' to Jennifer Breaton in 2003. The two were alone in his chambers at the time.Chief Justice Deborah Poritz called the incident especially 'inexplicable' given Subryan`s long and remarkable career. The judge, born poor in what was then British Guyana, worked his way through high school and eventually earned a law degree from the University of London.
Subryan immigrated to the United States in 1978 and spent a year at Rutgers Law School to get U.S. legal training, while working as a clerk. In 1993, he became the first Asian-American on the New Jersey bench.
The state paid $300,000 earlier this year to settle Breaton`s sexual harassment suit. Subryan will be suspended without pay for July and August.
