Lawyer Charged with Evidence Tampering

— May 5, 2005

The lawyer for a Brazoria County [TX] jail inmate who accused a jailer of sexual assault was charged and arrested on allegations of tampering with evidence.

Cassandra Evans-Jones, of Houston, was arrested Tuesday by Brazoria County sheriff’s deputies and released on $10,000 bond, said Sheriff Charles Wagner.

She did not return calls for comment Wednesday.

Brazoria County District Attorney Jeri Yenne said the charge against the attorney was filed because Evans-Jones received evidence regarding the claim made by the inmate, Michael James Green, 24, but did not turn it over to police.

“You can’t say ‘I am going to allege this crime has been committed, but I’m not giving you the evidence to show it,’ ” Yenne said Wednesday.

So what was the evidence? A semen sample inmate Green said he collected after he was sexually assaulted by a male guard. Green turned it over to Evans-Jones, his attorney, and she refused to surrender it to police. Now they’ve charged her with a crime??? Strange doings down in Texas . . . .

Details here from the Houston Chronicle.
