Tax Lawyer Sentenced to 15 Years, Ordered to Pay $2.5 Million Restitution

— May 5, 2005

LITTLE ROCK (AP) — While negotiating a plea agreement with federal authorities on fraud charges, tax lawyer Bobby Keith Moser wired $50,000 to a Las Vegas casino and took off for a week of gambling, a federal agent testified at Moser’s federal sentencing hearing Thursday.

After years of lavish living on what prosecutors say was money bilked from clients, Moser was sentenced to 15 1/2 years in prison and ordered to pay $2.5 million in restitution. He also was ordered to pay the Internal Revenue Service $212,648.

While stealing the retirement savings of his vulnerable clients:

[M]oser built a 5,000 square-foot house in west Little Rock and bought both his daughters new $32,000 BMWs and over time deposited $365,000 in a house account at the Mandalay Bay hotel and casino in Las Vegas.

While I usually shudder at long prison sentences, I have no sympathy for this particular asshole. Details here from the AP via the Detroit Free Press.
