With summer in full swing and no shortage of hot days, many people are reaching for ice cream as a way to cool down. However, one ice cream company based in Florida recently announced a recall for its ice cream products over concerns they might be contaminated with listeria.

According to the Food and Drug Administration (FDA), Sarasota-based Big Olaf Creamery is recalling all of its flavors and all lots of its products. The recall notes that products “with a June 30 expiration date or later are a part of the recall.” An announcement from the company states:

“Based on epidemiological information shared by the CDC and State Officials, Big Olaf may be a potential source of illness in an ongoing Listeria monocytogenes outbreak.”

So far, the Centers for Disease Control and Prevention (CDC) has reported “that 23 people have gotten sick from a listeria outbreak.” For those who don’t know, symptoms of illnesses linked to listeria contamination include high fever, nausea, headaches, and stiffness. Listeria is particularly dangerous for pregnant women, the elderly, children, and people with weak immune systems.

According to the company, 18 people impacted by the listeria outbreak reportedly had the Big Olaf Creamery ice cream before falling ill. Another ten people “either ate ice cream at a place that could have offered Big Olaf Creamery ice cream products or were a Big Olaf Creamery ice cream brand.”

It’s important to note, however, that the recalled ice cream was primarily sold in Florida and was available in senior homes and restaurants throughout the state. One location in Ohio also served the ice cream.
