— December 14, 2016

It has been the year for recalls. As 2016 comes to a close, there is yet another recall to report. This time Cuisinart recalls 8 million food processors over faulty blades. The big surprise with this recall is its scope. The recall covers 8.3 million units sold in the U.S. and Canada from July 1996 to December 2015. Yes, you read that right; the recall covers food processors sold over the last two decades. The recalled units were sold on several websites, as well as in department stores and gourmet food stores.

What exactly is the problem with the blades? The riveted blades have a tendency to shatter during use. Conair, the owner of the Cuisinart brand, advised the Consumer Product Safety Commission (CPSC) of 69 reports of the faulty blades. The reports included 30 injuries to those who ate food prepared with the affected models. The injuries all involved the mouths and teeth.

According to CPSC spokesperson Karla Crosswhite, “The hazard is a laceration. The riveted blade can crack over time and small metal pieces of that blade can break off into the processed food. … You can swallow that. People have broken teeth on it.”

What a terrifying thought, especially with the holidays right around the corner. Ms. Crosswhite continued, “With the holiday season being here, a lot of people are pulling out their food processor and doing a lot of cooking.” The CPSC advises that people with the affected models stop using them immediately and contact the company for a free replacement blade.

The affected models have stainless steel blades with four rivets and a beige plastic center hub. The units recalled were priced anywhere from $100 to $300. If the blade in your model does not have four rivets, it is not included in this recall. A list of affected model numbers follows. You can find the model number on the bottom of the food processor.
