According to GM, the problem is caused by corrosion on a specific connector. Officers still have manual steering, however that can make steering more difficult and increase the crash risk, especially if the officers are in pursuit.

To date, GM advises that no crashes or injuries have been reported. The problem’s cause is the fact that police cruisers can run up to 20 hours per day, much of which is time spent idling. The idle time causes heat to build up under the hood, increasing the chance for corrosion.

GM advises that dealerships will replace the steering gear control unit.

A police department in Illinois brought the problem to the automaker’s attention after experiencing loss of power steering in its fleet.
