Hormel Food Corp. Recalls More Than 228,614 Pounds of Canned Pork and Chicken Products

If you’re a fan of spam, listen up. Hormel Food Corp., based in Fremont, NE, just issued a recall of “approximately 228,614 pounds of canned pork and chicken products” over concerns that the products may be contaminated with chunks of metal and other foreign matter. According to the U.S. Department of Agriculture’s Food Safety and Inspection Service (FSIS), the issue was discovered after the company “received four consumer complaints stating that metal objects were found in the canned products.” FSIS was later notified of the issue on May 25, 2018.

According to the recall notice, the canned chicken and pork items were produced earlier this year, from February 8 to February 10. The following products are included in the recall:

• 12-oz. metal cans containing ‘SPAM Classic’ with a ‘Best By’ February 2021 date and production codes: F020881, F020882, F020883, F020884, F020885, F020886, F020887, F020888 and F020889. These products were shipped throughout the United States.
• 12-oz. metal cans containing ‘Hormel Foods Black-Label Luncheon Loaf’ with a ‘Best By’ February 2021 date and production codes F02098 and F02108. These products were shipped to Guam only.

All of the recalled products are stamped with the “establishment number ‘EST 199N’ on the bottom of the can.” So far there have been a handful of minor oral injuries reported linked with “consumption of the products.” If you or someone you know was injured or fell ill after eating one of the products, contact your healthcare provider. If you have one of the recalled items in your pantry, toss them in the trash or return them for a refund.
