Kroger recalls variety of products due to possible listeria contamination. The original recall covered only the grocery chain’s Cranberry Delight Trail Mix and a few other products. After further information became available, the recall was expanded.
The new information came from SunOpta, a supplier of sunflower kernels. That company expanded its own recall as certain lots of its product may have been tainted with listeria monocytogenes, bacteria that may cause a condition known as listeriosis. For most healthy adults, the digestive acids in the stomach will kill the bacteria and only minimal problems, if any, will be noticed.
According to the Centers for Disease Control and Prevention (CDC), for pregnant women, newborn babies, the elderly and those with compromised immune systems such as cancer patient on chemotherapy and those with HIV, the listeriosis infection can be dangerous, even fatal. In rare cases, even otherwise healthy adults may have serious reactions to the infection.
Kroger’s news release stated that no illnesses have been reported to date.
Other companies affected by SunOpta’s recall include, Clif Bar & Company, the Hershey Company, the Kashi Company and Atkins Nutritionals. All received sunflower kernels from SunOpta.
The Kroger products affected by the recall include all code dates for the following items sold in Kentucky and Indiana:
- Kroger Sunflower Salad Toppers, 3.5-ounce size (UPC: 0001111002127)
- Kroger Sunflower Kernels, 6-ounce size (UPC: 0001111061877)
- Kroger Cranberry Delight Trail Mix, 14-ounce size (UPC: 0001111089869)
- Kroger Broccoli Raisin Salad, all sizes (UPC: 0028715820000)
Kroger took the affected items off the shelves and activated its customer recall notification system.
If you purchased any of the affected products, you can take them back to Kroger for a refund or replacement.
