Recalling Bimbo’s Brownies and Chocolate Chip Muffins

— September 6, 2016

I hate it when I read the news only to find out that one more thing isn’t good for me. However, sometimes it’s for the best. Such is the case now with recalling Bimbo’s Brownies and chocolate chip muffins. Sure, sure, everything’s fine in moderation, except when it includes extra, unwanted ingredients, like little bits of plastic!

Bimbo (pronounce “Beembo”) is a Mexican multi-national firm is the world’s largest baking company. And, for those curious as to what “Bimbo” means in Spanish… nothing. It is, in the company’s words “a feel-good word created out of whole cloth.” I swear I’m not making this up. The company’s official designation (in Mexico) is Grupo Bimbo. But, I digress…

As the owner of several well-known trademarks, you could say Bimbo gets around. The recall involves one of Bimbo’s branches, the familiar Entenmann’s. The company has issued a voluntary recall of three of its Little Bites products due to them being adulterated, in this case with bits of inedible plastic. Bimbo’s adulteration was related to a manufacturing failure.

The products on recall include:

  • Little Bites Fudge Brownies (5-pack)
  • Little Bites Chocolate Chip Muffins (5- and 10-pack boxes)
  • Little Bites Variety Pack (20-pack)

The manufacturing failure was traced to a contracted Illinois bakery.

The FDA was informed of the recall and only one injury has been reported thus far. The risk of injury includes choking and cutting the inside of the mouth.

Click here for a list of affected products by “Best By” dates, UPC codes and states of distribution. In every instance, the affected product will have “3098” next to the “Best By” date on the box. All affected products were delivered the last two weeks of August and have been pulled from retailers’ shelves. The company assured consumers that the rest of the Entenmann’s oh-so-delicious line was safe to eat.

If you have any of the recalled items, you can take them back to the store for a refund or throw them away. If you have any questions, Bimbo’s representatives are a phone call away, 24 hours a day, at 1-800-984-0989. The company’s U.S. headquarters are located in Horsham, Pennsylvania.
