In the midst of Mother Nature’s wrath, as expressed via several violent and devastating storms over the last several weeks, lawmakers in Texas are fighting back the only way they can: by passing new legislation. The Texas Legislature makes sales tax holiday for emergency preparation supplies.

According to Chris Bryan, spokesperson for the Texas Comptroller of Public Account, “There’s a new sales tax holiday it’s called the Emergency Preparation Supplies sales tax holiday. It is really geared toward emergency supplies and this time of year, we’re starting to see some extreme weather coming into the Texas area.”

Mr. Bryan continued, “We all know it doesn’t get any better as we head through the spring and into the summer. So, it’s important to be prepared and this sales tax holiday gives folks the opportunity to stock up on some of those emergency supplies and save some money in the process.”

Lawmakers approved the EPS sales tax holiday during the 2015 Texas Legislature, after remembering the flooding, fires and tornadoes the Lone Star State suffered last year. While they can’t stop severe weather from coming, Texas lawmakers can certainly make it easier to be prepared.

Here are the details for the Emergency Preparation Supplies sales tax holiday:

  • It starts at 12:01AM on April 23rd and runs through midnight on April 25th.
  • No limits have been placed on the number of qualifying items you can buy.
  • Some qualifying items are flashlights, batteries, first aid kits, radios and even some bigger ticket items, such as portable generators and emergency ladders.
  • Non-qualifying items include chainsaws, camping supplies and batteries for motorized vehicles.

Amarillo’s Emergency Management Coordinator, Kevin Starbuck, is happy the EPS sales tax holiday is available. He said, “This tax free holiday is a great opportunity just to kind of focus in on an opportunity to go get a few supplies, to maybe complete your family disaster supply kit but it also serves as a good reminder that severe weather season is upon us.”
