Legal Pressure Mounts on Former Detroit Nurse Accused of Sexual Assault

— October 17, 2025

“The worst thing here is the amount of evidence showing him to have been a known predator,” said lead attorney Tim Holland of Michigan Sexual Assault Lawyers.

A former Detroit Medical Center nurse is facing multiple claims of sexual assault.

According to CBS News, the defendant, Wilfredo Figueroa-Berrios, worked as a nurse at Detroit Medical Center’s Sinai-Grace Hospital. A $100 million against Figueroa-Berrios was filed last month, but now, more alleged victims have come forward, filing a separate claim for an additional $150. The second lawsuit names defendants including Tenet Healthcare, VHS of Michigan, and VHS Sinai-Grace Hospital.

“The worst thing here is the amount of evidence showing him to have been a known predator,” said lead attorney Tim Holland of Michigan Sexual Assault Lawyers.

In a press conference, Holland said that more and more victims are coming forward against Figueroa-Berrios.

On Monday, for instance, Holland filed the $150 million lawsuit on behalf of plaintiff Trejah Shines. In it, Holland and Shines describe an incident that allegedly occurred on July 26, 2025, when Figueroa-Berrios was still employed as a nurse.

“The known predator performed an unnecessary pam smear upon her, and then after that she was drugged with a type of sedative, and then she was assaulted over some time we believe to be upwards of an hour,” Holland said.

Shines reported the incident to the police; law enforcement submitted a rape kit, which provided affirmative evidence of sexual assault.

CBS News notes that, before losing his job with Sinai-Grace, Figueroa-Berrios had previously been fired from another hospital following multiple complaints of sexual misconduct. He was also arrested for assault in 2019 and had allegedly shared inappropriate and sexually-charged material to social media.

Sinai-Grace, the lawsuit alleges, knew—or should have known—that Figueroa-Berris was a sexual predator and therefore had a duty to take some sort of action.

“We think that the evidence that they knew, or, at a minimum, should have known and prevented, we think it’s going to be absolutely insurmountable for Sinai-Grace,” Holland said in the press conference.

Sinai-Grace has since issued a statement to CBS News Detroit, claiming that it never received any indication that Figueroa-Berrios had harassed patients or engaged in any other forms of overt wrongdoing.

“Sinai-Grace Hospital prioritizes the safety of our patients. The hospital has rigorous processes in place to screen applicants prior to employment. There was no indication of a concern during that process,” the hospital said in a statement to CBS News Detroit. “We also have processes to identify and address patient safety issues and take appropriate action.”

“Upon becoming aware of these allegations, Sinai-Grace proactively initiated contact with and notified law enforcement and suspended the employee, who has since been terminated,” the statement says. “We do not condone any type of abuse and are cooperating fully with law enforcement. Federal privacy laws restrict us from sharing patient-specific information.”
