Florida Teenager Drops Social Media Lawsuit Against Meta

A Florida teenager who claims that became addicted to social media platforms like Instagram has dropped his lawsuit against Meta.

According to The Guardian, the 16-year-old plaintiff—identified in court documents only by the initials “R.K.C.”—recently settled similar claims against other social media companies, including TikTok, Snapchat, and YouTube. In the absence of a settlement or dismissal, R.K.C.’s remaining claims against Meta would likely have moved to trial later this week.

The BBC notes that R.K.C.’s claims were similar to those made by K.G.M., a now-20-year-old woman who secured a $375 million jury verdict from Meta.

Meta has since seized the dismissal as an opportunity to deride R.K.C.’s complaint.

“The claims never held up, and this outcome makes clear that we will not back away from defending ourselves against these baseless lawsuits,” Meta said in a statement.

Jeffcot and Ravipudi, told the BBC that their client “came into this process to hold social media companies accountable and push for changes to protect young people like himself.”

“He did that,” they said.

Jeffcot and Ravipudi emphasized that taking the case to trial would’ve risked spending weeks in court for an uncertain outcome. R.K.C., they said, is “ready to close this chapter and focus on his recovery and engage in therapy as he aspires to have a normal life.”

“In light of the overall successful result of the litigation and his concerns about enduring a grueling weeks-long trial, he has elected to withdraw his claims against Meta,” they said.
