“Diversity, equity, and inclusion initiatives are legal efforts that help students feel safe, supported, and respected,” Massachusetts Attorney General Andrea Joy Campbell said in a statement. “The Trump administration’s threats to withhold critical education funding due to the use of these initiatives are not only unlawful, but harmful to our children, families, and schools.”
“No state is poised to lose more than the state of California,” Newsom said in a statement.
“Despite no criminal convictions nor immigration violations and having never participated in any protest in the United States or elsewhere, these students were told that due to the termination of their student status, they are ‘expected to depart the United States immediately,’” the ACLU of Montana said.
“President Trump, before he was elected, this has been a huge issue for him,” U.S. Attorney General Pam Bondi said. “Pretty simple: girls play in girls’ sports, boys play in boys’ sports.”
More than a dozen state attorneys general have filed a lawsuit against the U.S. Department of Education, alleging that the abrupt end of coronavirus-related financial relief will make it difficult to provide students with much-needed resources. According to The Hill, the lawsuit was filed earlier this week in the Manhattan-based U.S. District Court for the
President Donald Trump has issued multiple executive orders authorizing the deportation of foreign nationals who “bear hostile attitudes” toward the United States and its “citizens, culture, government, institutions, or founding principles.”
“The Government argument … implies that it could deport and incarcerate any person, including U.S. citizens, without legal consequence, so long as it does so before a court can intervene,” wrote Justice Sonia Sotomayor.
The NCLA filed its lawsuit shortly after a small coalition of conservative senators, including former Senate Majority Leader Mitch McConnell (R-KY), joined forces with Democrats to pass a bill to lower tariffs on Canada and curb the president’s ability to further complicate international trade.
“The President has no power to do any of this,” the attorneys general wrote in court filings. “The Elections EO is unconstitutional, antidemocratic, and un-American.”
In a press release announcing the lawsuit, the New Civil Liberties Alliance characterized the tariffs as “unlawful” and said that their imposition would come at a high cost to American taxpayers.
