Trump Launches Tirade Against Undocumented Immigrants, Mexico, and Liberal Filibuster

— April 2, 2018

President Donald Trump meted out harsh words to the Senate Monday, warning that “our country is being stolen” by undocumented immigrants.

In an effort to end a Senate filibuster, the commander-in-chief blasted lawmakers’ inaction while calling on the Mexican government to stop ‘caravans’ of Central American migrants from making headway toward the border.

“Mexico has the absolute power not to let these large “Caravans” of people enter their country. They must stop them at their Northern Border, which they can do because their border laws work, not allow them to pass through into our country, which has no effective border laws,” wrote Trump on Twitter. “Congress must immediately pass Border Legislation, use Nuclear Option if necessary, to stop the massive inflow of Drugs and People. Border Patrol Agents (and ICE) are GREAT, but the weak Dem laws don’t allow them to do their job. Act now Congress, our country is being stolen!”

Trump’s speculation on migrant ‘caravans’ may have a surprising tinge of truth. According to BuzzFeed, a massive group of Central American refugees are currently en route to the U.S.-Mexico border. An estimated thousand migrants – most from Honduras – have already passed checkpoints in Guatemala and the Mexican state of Chiapas.

Immigration agents seem uninclined to stop them, opting to take lunch breaks instead of ordering arrests.

The so-called ‘caravan’ is compromised of real migrants but organized by volunteers. Known as ‘Pueblos Sin Fronteras’ – people without borders – the collective is determined to help immigrants make their journey overland safely. BuzzFeed claims PSF is helping the refugees avoid law enforcement as well as well as the drug cartels and criminal gangs which frequently extort and enslave migrants making the perilous journey north.

Reports from Politico.com suggest the event may be an annual occurrence, quoting Secretary of Homeland Security Kirstjen Nielson as saying that she’s “working with Mexican officials to address this yearly illegal alien caravan. Exploring all options.”

“I echo @POTUS demand for Congress to address outdated and dangerous immigration loopholes – the system is broke,” she wrote in a follow-up Twitter post. “The traffickers, [transnational criminal organizations] and others know how to exploit our laws. We need to get smarter, tougher. We’re exploring all options to protect the Homeland.”

Trump’s presidency and stance on immigration-related matters has been marked by steadily increasing ire. Blaming Mexico for doing “very little, if not NOTHING” to curb illegal immigration, Trump threatened to decimate NAFTA in retaliation.

The president also took time on Sunday to lash out at Democrats, claiming there will be “no more DACA deal.” Rather than working with their liberal colleagues, Trump urged Republicans to devise a solution on their own.

“DACA is dead because the Democrats didn’t care or act, and now everyone wants to get onto the DACA bandwagon […] No longer works,” Trump tweeted. “Must build Wall and secure our borders with proper Border legislation. Democrats want No Borders, hence drugs and crime!”

President Trump rescinded DACA in early September.
