Trump Wins Reprieve, Temporarily Prevents the BBC from Obtaining Financial Records

A federal judge has granted a limited reprieve to President Donald Trump, who had challenged another court order directing him to share certain financial information with the BBC.

According to The Guardian, U.S. District Judge Roy Altman issued a temporary pause while he considers the president’s request to revise parts of Trump’s defamation lawsuit against the United Kingdom-based broadcaster. The lawsuit was over a 2024 documentary that only aired overseas, but which Trump claims hurt his domestic business interests.

Last month, however, a federal judge in a Miami court ordered the president to produce a vast collection of financial records no later than August 6. These documents would likely contain information about Trump’s hundreds of businesses, as well as his family trust.

On Wednesday, Trump’s legal team asked for a reprieve, saying that the BBC is seeking a “shockingly broad amount of information based on clearly political motivations.”

In an order issued later that day, Altman said that Trump’s argument—that the documentary damaged his brand and businesses—could impact the BBC’s ability to request and review certain financial records.

Trump’s legal team also noted that they are currently revising the lawsuit and asked that Trump be shielded from discovery demands until the revisions are complete.

“This is a compelling argument,” Altman wrote. “If the Plaintiff’s amendment obviates the need to compel a non-party to disclose confidential financial information, we think it’s prudent to enter a brief stay of the Order until the amendment request is resolved.”

For its part, the BBC contends that the records are relevant to the lawsuit because Trump’s public reputation is closely associated with his supposed success as a businessman. Attorneys for the network further claimed that Trump, along with his trust, are engaged in a “transparent effort to evade this Court’s clear and direct order to continue to avoid the discovery obligations that Plaintiff took on when he chose to file this lawsuit.”

“Simply because the Trump Trust faces an obligation it does not agree with, and is confronted with an imminent deadline of its own making by waiting to file its stay motion until the day before its first Court-ordered disclosure day, does not make its request an emergency,” the BBC argued on Wednesday.

Chuck Tobin, an attorney for the BBC, noted that any financial documents shared with the company could be placed under a protective order, preventing them from being shared with anyone not already involved in the lawsuit.
