The weather is finally beginning to warm up, which means more and more people will be enjoying fun outdoor activities. However, if riding around on an ATV is your cup of tea, you might want to tune into a recent recall issued by Polaris Industries Inc.

After receiving nearly 793 incident reports involving “warped, melted, or burned side panels, 47 fires, and four minor burn injuries,” the company decided to recall “all model year 2015 and 2016 Polaris Sportsman 850 and 1000 model all-terrain vehicles.” At the moment, the recall includes about 19,200 vehicles. The 2015 Sportsman 1000 ATVs boasts other safety concerns, in that their “exhaust springs can stretch and damage the exhaust seal,” resulting in exhaust leaks and fire hazards.

But how do consumers know if they have one of these recalled ATVs? It’s simple. On the front grill of the vehicle, “Polaris” is printed in big letters, while “Sportsman 850” or “Sportsman 1000” is printed on the side of the steering column. Additionally, model numbers can be located on the fuel tank cover, and for those who still aren’t sure if their ATV is included in the recall, they can visit www.polaris.com and check the Product Safety Recalls page to see if their vehicle identification numbers are on the list.

It’s also important to note that the recalled ATVs were sold nationwide, in a variety of colors, between May 2014 and March 2017. If you or someone you know has one of these ATVs, the recall states you should “stop using them immediately and contact Polaris to schedule a free repair.”

Polaris is also taking initiative by contacting “all known purchasers directly.” For questions and concerns, consumers can call 800-765-2747 from 7 a.m. to 7 p.m. CDT weekdays to speak to a Polaris representative.
