— June 28, 2017

Judge Deidre Hill recently decided to allow the wrongful death lawsuit against actor Jim Carrey to move forward. Despite his attorney, Raymond Boucher, requesting the entire case to be thrown out, the judge sided with attorney Michael Avenatti, who is representing Cathriona White’s family, and scheduled a 20-day trial for April 2018. Avenatti said, “the public deserves to know the truth,” and added that the party is looking forward to the April trial.

But what happened to cause the wrongful death lawsuit being filed in the first place? Well, for those who don’t know, White, a makeup artist, and Carrey had a sort of on again, off relationship dating back to 2012, and in September of 2015 the couple “ended their relationship for the second time.” Shortly after, White was found dead at her home in California after overdosing on a “cocktail of prescription drugs.”

As a result of White’s death, her estranged husband, Mark Burton, thought her death was a bit odd and proceeded to file a wrongful death lawsuit against Carrey. In the lawsuit, Burton claimed that Carrey was responsible for White’s death because he provided her “with the pills she overdosed on and gave her sexually transmitted diseases, claims which were also made by White’s mother Brigid Sweetman in her own wrongful death lawsuit.”

Carrey’s lawyer pushed back against the claims, though, and “argued that the claims made under drugs legislation were likely to fall outside the statute of limitations and said the wrongful death claims were too vague.” He tried to get the case thrown out by filing a motion, but “Judge Deirdre Hill at Los Angeles Superior Court indicated that she would side with the prosecution, who urged her not to delay proceedings any longer.

Ahmed Ibrahim, Burton and Sweetman’s lawyer, also pushed back against Boucher’s argument, saying:

“We are clearly not alleging that Jim Carrey was selling drugs out of the back of his pick-up truck and was therefore not marketing or selling in the traditional sense of what that word would bring to mind.”

Despite the charges, Carrey has denied all of the allegations, “which his lawyers called malicious and predatory.” When asked how he feels about the pending trial, Boucher said, “Mr. Carrey loved Ms. White dearly and so obviously it will be a very painful process for him.” Additionally, Boucher also revealed that the actor “had never intended to settle with White’s family, but the had contested the discovery process” nonetheless.
