If you’re a fan of beef stew, you may be interested in this latest product recall. Earlier this week, Swift Beef Co., “doing business as JBS USA Food Company, a Cactus, Texas establishment,” decided to recall an estimated 4,702 pounds of its beef stew product over concerns that it might be “contaminated with foreign matter, specifically plastic and metal.” According to the U.S. Department of Agriculture’s Food Safety and Inspection Service (FSIS), the following boneless beef stew products are included in the recall, and were all produced on December 13, 2017:

  • Cases containing six 5-lb. bulk cryovac plastic bags containing fresh beef stew meat intended for HEB grocery store retailer re-package. The affected case code is 69404.
  • Re-packaged various weight beef stew meat trays that also contain separately wrapped vegetables. The meat trays are marked with establishment 7231 on the side of the tray.
  • Re-packaged various weight beef stew labeled as HEB brand: Beef Stew Meat Tenderized RP, Beef Stew Meat RP, Beef Stew Meat VP, Beef Stew Meat-CR VP, Beef Stew Meat Tenderized VP, Beef Stew Meat CP, and Beef Stew Kit.

Consumers can tell if they have one of these recalled products by checking the establishment number next to the USDA mark of inspection. According to the recall notice, the establishment number to look out for is EST. 3D or you can check for EST. 7231 “on the side of the tray.” Additionally, all of the products included in the recall were only shipped to “HEB retail stores throughout Texas.”

The problem itself was discovered back on December 24 at an HEB location in San Antonio “when they opened boxes containing the multi-vac packages.” Upon discovering the problem, HEB acted swiftly and immediately pulled the contaminated items from all stores.

Fortunately, there have been no reports of “adverse reactions due to consumption of these products.” For now, anyone with questions or concerns about this particular recall can contact Cameron Bruett, Head of Corporate Affairs, at (970) 506-7801, according to the recall notice.
