Do you have a child who enjoys a stroll through Claire’s every now and then? If so, then this recall notice is for you. Last week, Claire’s Accessories, a retail store “known for selling accessories and cosmetics targeted to young girls and teenagers, recalled some of its makeup over asbestos concerns.”

Based in Florida, the retail store decided to issue the recall “after a Rhode Island mother grew concerned about the ingredients in glitter makeup she had purchased for her 6-year-old daughter and sent the samples out for independent testing.” According to the recall notice, the makeup sample “tested positive for tremolite asbestos, which has been associated with mesothelioma and other types of cancer.”

Understandably, the test results alarmed the mother, who happens to work “at a law firm specializing in asbestos litigation.” After alerting her boss to the issue, the two of them purchased and tested similar products from Claire’s stores across nine different states. To their alarm, each test came back “positive for tremolite asbestos.

From there, the two alerted the media, which “prompted Claire’s to launch a safety investigation and pull multiple products from its shelves.” Just recently, the retailer “updated consumers with a full list of potentially affected products, including various glitter makeup sets, an eyeshadow and lip gloss palette and a glitter cell phone makeup compact.”

So what can parents do if their child has one of the recalled makeup items? Well, for now, Claire’s will “issue refunds for products returned while it continues to conduct a safety investigation.
