“I am extremely disappointed and disagree with this settlement,” said outgoing U.S. Capitol Police Chief Thomas Manger, who noted that a prior Department of Justice investigation had found no wrongdoing on the part of law enforcement. “This settlement sends a chilling message to law enforcement nationwide, especially to those with a protective mission like ours.”
The four plaintiffs were among the 1,500 people pardoned by President Donald Trump for their role in attacking and vandalizing the Capitol.
History professor Christine Philliou, another plaintiff in the lawsuit, claims that she lost a $250,000 National Endowment for the Humanities grant to study Greek Orthodoxy Christians in 19th century Turkey. The funding was canceling without any explanation, other than a note stating that the administration’s priorities have changed, leaving Philliou and her team “flabbergasted.”
“Under federal law, schools cannot provide benefits to illegal aliens that they do not provide to U.S. citizens,” U.S. Attorney General Pam Bondi said in a statement. “The Justice Department will relentlessly fight to vindicate federal law and ensure that U.S. citizens are not treated like second-class citizens anywhere in the country.”
Aside from facing legal action from the McKinney Housing Authority, Providence Village has also been charged with discrimination following a years-long investigation by the U.S. Department of Housing and Urban Development.
The Democratic National Committee had initially sought an injunction against the order’s enforcement. However, in earlier hearings, U.S. District Judge Amir Ali noted that the FEC itself told the court that it would not comply with any presidential requests limiting its autonomy.
In court documents, the Department of Justice provided no explanation for the dismissal.
“Imagine the terror going on in those kids’ minds,” attorney Fred Dorr said. “And then you turn to the jury and you say, ‘What’s that worth, to watch your child die like that?’”
Strickland, who weighed about 334 pounds at the time of the incident—several dozen pounds over Blizzard Beach’s weight limit—claims that he was ejected from his Disney inner tube as a result of the ride’s “exhilarating speeds.”
In court documents, Perlmutter and her attorneys asked the court to issue a temporary restraining order prohibiting Trump administration appointees from interfering with the Library of Congress and its operations.
