“It’s clear that this was a coordinated operation intended to sweep up as many people as possible, not based on any individualized reason, but based on their apparent race, ethnicity or occupation; arrest them and expel as many of them from the country as possible, regardless of whether they knew their rights or the consequences,” said ACLU of Northern California attorney Bree Bernwanger.
“Defendants failed to protect Mr. Laureano when they placed a particularly aggressive, violent, and discriminatory inmate with a history of severe physical assault and mental health issues with a vulnerable, 19-year-old black gay male, Mr. Laureano,” the lawsuit alleges.
“No investigation was conducted to determine if Ms. Crutchfield was the suspect, and a facial recognition database was used to identify her,” says the lawsuit, which also alleges that the Detroit Police Department’s facial recognition systems are vulnerable to racial bias.
“Without evidence or support, the Trump administration is using the power and resources of the federal government to launch a fullscale [sic] assault on DEIA—not only within federal agencies, but throughout the private sector in contravention of the Constitution and other federal laws,” the lawsuit alleges.
U.S. District Judge Lisa Godbey Wood found that “the undisputed evidence establishes that multiple NBC statements were false.”
Attorneys for the federal government alleged that Coinbase makes billions by making it easier for consumers to trade cryptocurrencies—but failed to provide its own investors with strong protections. Coinbase had, for instance, allegedly continued to operate as an unregistered exchange even after warning investors of the risk of regulatory action.
In his ruling, U.S. District Judge Christopher R. Cooper said that the claim should be heard by the Federal Labor Relations Authority, which has jurisdiction over most federal labor union-related disputes.
“Target’s CEO Brian Cornell and its Board of Directors did not oversee or disclose the obvious risks of Target’s 2023 LGBT-Pride Campaign and the ESG/DEI initiatives which it advanced, but they told investors that they did,” the lawsuit says.
“This unconstitutional action forces nearly 600,000 Venezuelans and their families currently living in the U.S. with TPS protection into the untenable position of potentially being forced to return to a country experiencing one of the worst humanitarian crises in the history of the Western hemisphere,” the plaintiffs said in a joint statement.
“If served, we will vigorously defend our admission practice,” a University of California spokesperson said in a statement. “We believe this to be a meritless suit.”
