“I am afraid that if I continue my lawsuit, I will personally be subjected to harassment that will negatively impact my mental health, my safety, and my ability to graduate as soon as possible,” plaintiff Lindsay Hecox wrote in a legal filing.

In defense of its decision to freeze certain grants to the plaintiff schools, the Education Department claimed that giving students the freedom to choose bathrooms that correspond with their gender identity, rather than their biological sex, violates Title IX provisions.

Another lawyer for the class, John Yanchunis of the law firm Morgan & Morgan, said that—in spite of the lower-than-requested award—he hopes the verdict will send a clear and unambiguous message to Google and other technology companies.

The city indicated that reaching a settlement was the best possible outcome.
“This is a win for the TPS community. We are here because our country is in crisis. This is why TPS exists,” plaintiff Cecilia Gonzalez said. “The Ninth Circuit has recognized that the Trump administration cannot do away with TPS simply because they don’t like it. We will keep fighting for our rights under the law.”
