Fans of Simple Truth macadamia nuts are in for a shortage for the time being, at least in three states. Recently, The Kroger Co. issued a recall of their Simple Truth brand macadamia nuts from a number of different retailers over concerns that they may have been contaminated with Listeria monocytogenes.

However, though the company has issued the recall, few details surrounding it are known. The notice “on Kroger’s website had few details,” and doesn’t “name the nut grower or packer and does not indicate how the potential contamination was discovered.” So with so few details revealed in the recall notice, how can consumers tell if they have a recalled product? It’s simple, really. The recalled bags of macadamia nuts have the following information on their labels:

  • Simple Truth brand
  • 12 ounces
  • UPC number 11110-02478
  • Sell By: MAY 02 18

So far, the Simple Truth dry roasted macadamia nuts have been distributed “to its branded stores in the greater Cincinnati area — including Northern Kentucky and Dayton, Ohio plus South Eastern Indiana — and to Dillon’s, Baker’s and Gerbe’s stores.”

It turns out, however, that the Simple Truth dry roasted macadamia nuts have an exceptionally long shelf life, so “there is concern consumers may have the recalled macadamia nuts in their homes.” That’s a big deal, and more reason for consumers to be vigilant in checking their products because listeria is nothing to scoff at. According to the Centers for Disease Control and Prevention, the illness can result in symptoms like “fever, muscle aches, headache, stiff neck, confusion, loss of balance and convulsions sometimes preceded by diarrhea or other gastrointestinal symptoms.” In more serious cases, the infection can spread “beyond the gastrointestinal tract.” Additionally, in “pregnant women, the infection can cause miscarriages, stillbirths, premature delivery or life-threatening infection of the newborn.

Because of the slew of health concerns related to listeria, consumers who have eaten any of the recalled macadamia nuts and have noticed any of the symptoms related to listeria are urged to “seek medical attention and tell their doctors about the possible exposure to the pathogen so the proper diagnostic tests can be performed.

Consumers who have eaten the recalled nuts but aren’t showing symptoms at the moment should simply “monitor themselves for two months for symptoms,” which can “take up to 70 days after exposure to develop.”

Those with further questions or concerns related to the recall can contact the Kroger Co. at 800-576-4377.
