Fans of chicken breakfast sausage beware. According to the U.S. Department of Agriculture’s Food Safety and Inspection Service (FSIS), a recall has been issued for chicken breakfast sausage produced and packaged by DiLuigi Foods and sold by Trader Joe’s because of undeclared allergens and mislabeling.

At the moment, an estimated 3,500 pounds of the chicken sausage “produced and packaged” between August 10 through August 24 has been recalled. Unfortunately, before the recall was issued, the product was shipped nationwide to numerous Trade Joe’s locations. But what allergens did the label fail to declare?

According to the recall notice, the recalled product “contains soy lecithin, a known allergen that is not listed on the product’s label.” The problem itself was “discovered during routine label verification.” Consumers can tell if they have one of the recalled products by checking the establishment number inside the USDA inspection mark. All of the recalled products have establishment number P-4398 and are packaged in a “1-pound, vacuum-sealed package.”

Fortunately, there have been no reports of consumers suffering allergic reactions from eating the mislabeled products. However, anyone concerned about the recall or who think they might be suffering from adverse reactions should contact their healthcare provider.

For now, consumers are being advised by the FSIS to either return the recalled sausage for a refund or to throw it away completely.
