A former inmate at Clark County jail has filed a lawsuit against Southwest Washington County, claiming that its corrections employees are undertrained, negligent, and regularly engage in the use of excessive force. According to Oregon Public Broadcasting, the lawsuit was filed on behalf of plaintiff O’Neal Payne. Attorneys for Payne say that, on August 13,
“The Records Rule has placed most records about county-held immigration detainees in an impenetrable black box, shielding them from public scrutiny,” the ACLU said in its lawsuit.
“The question every American should be asking is, ‘What are they hiding?’” Democracy Forward CEO Skye Perryman said in a statement. “DOGE must not be allowed to operate in the shadows without the transparency, oversight, and opportunity for public participation required of any federal department by law.”
“I have been on the bench for over four decades. I can’t remember another case where the question presented was as clear,” said U.S. District Judge John Coughenour.
In her lawsuit, James said that scammers and con artists have stolen millions of dollars from Citibank’s customers. Many of these acts could have been prevented, James claimed, if Citibank’s security systems were better-equipped to investigate red flags, like accessing an account from an unrecognized device.
“We acknowledge and apologize for the distress cause to the duke, and the damage inflicted on relationships, friendships and family, and have agreed to pay him substantial damages,” News Group Newspapers said in a settlement statement.
“Presidents are powerful,” New Jersey Attorney General Platkin said, “but he is not a king.”
An investigation led by the Federal Aviation Administration found that the JetBlue aircraft involved in the incident had a longstanding history of issues with its potable water systems; it is believed to be the same aircraft suspected of dropping ice on a Massachusetts home in August 2023.
Dissenting FTC Commissioner Melissa Holyoak said that the agency’s case against PepsiCo is among “the worst case[s] I have seen in my time at the commission.”
