Inaugural Data-Driven Lawyer Award Winners and the “Future of Law”

— March 6, 2019

Five tech-savvy attorneys – from senior associate to shareholder – discuss the importance and impact
of data and analytics in today’s challenging legal environment.

In December 2018, Law360 and Lex Machina, both LexisNexis companies, announced that recipients of the inaugural Data-Driven Lawyer Award would share their best practices and insights on the effective use of analytics during a ”Future of Law” webcast. The Data-Driven Lawyer awards, created by Law360 and Lex Machina, recognize attorneys who are using data and analytics to develop new ways to meet the challenges of their practice.

The 2018 Data-Driven Lawyer Award and its recipients were recently profiled in Law360. The five award recipients, whose titles range from Senior Associate to Partner and Shareholder, include:

  • Eric Falkenberry, Partner, DLA Piper
  • Scott Forman, Shareholder, Littler Mendelson PC
  • Kate Gaudry, Senior Associate, Kilpatrick Townsend & Stockton LLP
  • Evan Moses, Shareholder/Co-Chair, National Class Action Practice, Ogletree Deakins Nash Smoak & Stewart PC
  • Kyle Poe, Partner, Morgan Lewis & Bockius LLP

“In an increasingly data-driven legal environment, today’s attorneys are turning to advanced technologies to help them know the unknowable, uncover trends, generate insights and craft winning legal strategies,” said Josh Becker, Chairman of Lex Machina. “These first five Data-Driven Lawyer Award recipients epitomize best practices for integrating data and analytics into the daily practice of law.”

“The increasing volumes of data in today’s legal environment require both sophisticated technologies and a new mindset, and these award recipients have demonstrated a penchant for both,” said Jackie Bell a senior reporter for Law360. “As data complexity continues to impact the legal profession, the need for thoughtful approaches to analytics, A.I. and other advanced technologies is only going to increase.”

Award methodology
To be considered for the award, individual attorneys were required to submit a 1,000-word response on how they are leveraging legal analytics, giving up to three concrete examples. Submissions were collected between July 16 and August 24, 2018. A panel of six judges from Law360, Lex Machina, Ravel Law and LexisNexis reviewed all submissions and selected the winners, who were announced on December 2, 2018.
